Fox News Viewers Are Misinformed Study, The Critique

This video is uploaded to HowTheWorldWorks by Lee Doren. A recent study from the University of Maryland and WordPublicOpinion.org supposedly shows that Fox News viewers were more likely to believe false information about American politics. After looking at the supposed ‘myths’ that Fox News watchers believe, I quickly realized that something was wrong with the study. As a result, I read the study very carefully and realized that the whole study was bogus. Overall, the study about misinformation and the 2010 election did not have data to support its conclusions. In fact, the study may simply demonstrate that Fox News viewers are more informed than the researchers. It was clear that the researchers were unaware of most of the data provided to the public. When conducting this research I looked at a variety of sources. Most of the sources can clearly be seen in the video itself. Below is my attempt to list all the sources in no particular order that I reviewed. Some sources were not used at all. www.worldpublicopinion.org www.worldpublicopinion.org www.worldpublicopinion.org www.huffingtonpost.com tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com thinkprogress.org www.newscorpse.com www.alternet.org gawker.com online.wsj.com www.bls.gov mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com cboblog.cbo.gov cboblog.cbo.gov www.cbo.gov reason.com www.fiscalcommission.gov newsbusters.org patterico.com johnnydollar.us newsbusters.org www.newsbusters.org www.youtube.com www.nytimes.com www.verumserum.com www

Lol this video is a clear example of the stupidity of false facts and it’s viewers there are also two other studies indicating liberals are more intelligent than conservatives. But away out of the three studies in total only one study leaves room for debate ( not this one ). I think it’s important for stupid people know that they’re stupid. So u guys know to stay out the way of progress.

  2. hergs says:

In the last segment you seem to flip flop and defend the study when the question asks whether it was proven that the Chamber received foreign money. The correct answer is that it was not proven, because the Chamber refused to reveal the source of contributions. This does not mean the Chamber did not receive foreign funds, it means it was not proven. Rachel’s point stands… no one believes the Chamber, except Fox News… whose viewers are the most misinformed overall.

You did a good job of pointing out some of the vital flaws of this study. I think we would find that many other academic studies have similar flaws. However, it doesn’t change the fact that Fox News is incredibly biased and misleading to its viewers (see Shepherd Smith’s video about the bill for 9/11 first responders). I’m still puzzled why Fox News viewers are so misinformed about something so widely acknowledged such as climate change. Maybe they all work in petroleum and coal? Hmmm…

After reading and watching enough lectures by Thomas Sowell and Milton Friedman, i have realized the fatal flaws of liberal thinking. I think anyone that supports freedom of choice needs to read their books or watch their lectures. They will give you clarity and insight towards how freedom works and why government is a problem, not a solution.

Still not able to grasp concepts? Like go of your dick for just a moment and concentrate on the statement.

  6. korwinblue says:

@TheTMA1 “4) Pedophiles can be rehabilitated but Fags can’t.”

What is wrong with homosexuality? Your Bronze Age book says it’s bad?

  7. esj8341 says:

The only thing the U of MD survey proves is that the average Fox viewer is more informed than the authors of the U of MD survey.

  8. ConcernedAmericans says:

Excellent work Lee. Calling this a “study” is truly laughable.

  9. Hiraghm says:

    @TehBANN3D

Are you referring to the United States Constitution?

Tell your nurse to lower your meds, you’re delusional.

  10. Hiraghm says:

    @TehBANN3D

    Completely untrue.

None of those listed are bastions are protecting capitalistic interest.
Two are theocratic dictatorships (Iran and the former Afghanistan), one was an old-fashioned thugocracy, and Vietnam has turned communist (thanks to American liberals).

We didn’t nuke any of them. That shows extreme restraint and… tolerance.

  11. usc90Productions says:

@eeTex Is it easier to do that than refute any of the research documented in the video?

  12. xtaxplayer says:

@leftcoastlean Absolutely!!! …and the left never disseminates information without the intention of forming preconditioned conclusions and the Moon is made of Cheese, Obama’s agenda is good for the country and Pelosi, Frank, Water’s didn’t make a penny of the mortgage crisis.
Now that we all have had fun with the “Alice in Wonderland” trip, would you like to have a truthful discussion of facts??

  13. xtaxplayer says:

@one340 … Who declared war on Iraq and Afghanistan, were the Dem’s on vacation? Who has been continuing the war and adding more troops and equipment (you know the money being spent)? Are you that uneducated, or is it that you are purposely trying to miss lead people?

If you are here to discuss the truth, we can do that. If you are here to falsely blame one group or party… Then realize I will smack you down each time, which I agree does no one any good. The choice is yours at this point…

  14. xtaxplayer says:

@one340 First you said “despite having the tax cuts for 8 years and unemployment close to 10%..”, when did unemployment go to 10%? under the Dem’s or Republican’s (neither of which I care for)? The “brief” recession you speak of was ended by the tax cut’s on business then added to by the tax cuts on individuals. The financial crisis didn’t start in 2007, that would be the same as saying someone that over ate for twenty years started getting fat in the last two years of their life. Con’t…

  15. HoldingOnToLiberty says:

@Phreakwars You really want to go down that road. How about vastly underreporting the number of people at the Glenn Beck event on 8/28 and grossly over reporting the number of people at the Ed Schultz flop.

  16. ABGrhino says:

You could of pointed out that OBAMA did in their own words, take foreign money. They so-called returned it when they got caught.

  17. HowTheWorldWorks says:

    @LiberalViewer

LOL. You couldn’t have given me this video? You couldn’t have just said, “Well done demolishing this study, however that doesn’t change my opinion of Fox News in light of the numerous videos I’ve made.” I get the “you make some valid points.”

I’ll take that as a high compliment.

Also, the ‘Doc Fix’ wouldn’t change. But, it was negotiated with the PPACA (S.1776 in 2009) to bring reluctant doctors on board and then stripped before the CBO report.

    Happy New Year Allen.

  18. Swoop187OG187 says:

@LovePsalm1 – I’d love to, however I only have 500 chars and cant post links on youtube.

I suppose if you’re interested you can look up my assertions.

  19. eeTex says:

This counter study to University of Maryland study was brought to you by Glenn Beck University!

  20. eeTex says:

I don’t need a study to determine if Glenn Beck and his puppet shows and ridiculous chalkboard charade is harmful to brain.

@hanzo138 wrote: “LOL. So the content of the OpEd being reported on is irrelevant, just the title? NICE!”

No, that’s not what I said and, AGAIN, I think you’ll find if you stick to criticizing what I actually said, it should reveal to you that your current criticisms are inapposite.

I hope that helps clear up your misunderstanding and

thanks again for the reply :-)

  22. hanzo138 says:

@LiberalViewer LOL. So the content of the OpEd being reported on is irrelevant, just the title? NICE!

  23. LiberalViewer says:

You make some valid points in this video about poorly worded questions in the U of MD survey, Lee, but you go off the rails trying to actually justify Fox News misinformation (eg how much would the “doc fix” cost if PPACA had NOT passed?). Most importantly, you ignore the elephant in the room: the huge amount of misinformation Fox News spreads. I have 140+ videos documenting Fox News bias, including much Fox News misinformation at

    tinyurl(.)com/foxnewsbias

Happy New Year & thx 4 the video :-)

  24. LiberalViewer says:

@hanzo138 I don’t want to argue about my videos in this comment section (I allow free commenting on those videos), but, AGAIN, the OpEd in my net neutrality video was titled “‘Net neutrality’ would slow the flow,” but Fox News never mentioned the words or even the concept of “net neutrality” which was my valid point. Also, if you go back and watch my video about Michelle Malkin again, I think you’ll realize it is honestly edited and everything I say in it is accurate.

    Thx 4 the reply :-)

  25. hanzo138 says:

@LiberalViewer So you deny that the OpEd dealt primarily with government stepping “out of bounds” and that regulations kill innovation and not net neutrality exclusively? The Malkin piece, you gave no context. You didn’t inform anyone that the show was on for about ten minutes before Beck went to a hard break. You made it seem that Beck cut her off for what she was saying when HE talked about the same thing earlier in the show. You unfairly attacked Michelle for Beck being an attention whore.
